Simulation Kit: Low Speed Wind Turbine
June 2024 · IoT Engineer Intern, Kedaireka MBKM (Jun–Des 2024)

Context

Built during my IoT Engineer internship in the Kedaireka MBKM program, alongside the micro-hydro and solar tracker kits. The project ran under the Kedaireka 2024 matching-fund program (Program Dana Padanan), with PT Telenetina Sarana Teknik Utama as the industry partner. The kit is used for training and demonstrations.

Problem

A wind turbine is hard to teach from a textbook: students need to see the wind speed, the electrical output, and the state of the batteries and loads while they operate the system. The kit puts a real turbine and a controllable DC grid panel in one setup, with live measurements.

Approach

  • Sensors: an anemometer for wind speed and power meters for the electrical output.
  • Controller: the same ESP32 industrial I/O controller board as the micro-hydro kit reads the sensors over Modbus.
  • Data path: the ESP32 publishes the readings over MQTT to a Node-RED HMI on the panel, the same data flow as the micro-hydro kit.

System

  • Wind turbine: a low-speed turbine with composite blades, designed in SolidWorks and laminated by hand in molds.
  • Smart DC Grid panel: a control panel titled “Hybrid Energy System: Smart DC Grid”, with an MPPT charge controller, DIN-rail breakers and terminals, two batteries, selector switches, and a touchscreen HMI.

My Contribution

  • Panel design: drew the electrical design in QElectroTech and modeled the panel in SolidWorks.
  • Controller board: co-designed the ESP32 industrial I/O controller PCB with teammates, shared with the micro-hydro kit.
  • Controller firmware: programmed the ESP32 in Arduino IDE.
  • Turbine components: worked on the turbine in composite materials, including mold fabrication and lamination, and made SolidWorks models and assembly drawings.

Result

The turbine and panel were exhibited at the Faculty of Industrial Technology booth at PRIMA ITB 2024.
